Prototype
(non-circular-gear) Variators have been built for agricultural and
industrial applications, but were not found suitable for automotive use.
The main flaws were a lack of engine braking and complex differential
gearing. The Variator is now a viable automotive transmission concept
because of developments by KTR. The gearing has been simplified thanks to
our new proprietary gearing technology. Engine braking is now available
throughout the full range of ratios.
- Infinite variability (can
be classified as an all-gear CVT)

- Mechanical efficiency
between 95% and 98%
- No torque converter
required since the Variator starts from 0
- Weight and volume savings
over current CVTs
- Engine braking throughout
the full ratio range
- Improved fuel economy
- Lower exhaust emissions
